Abstract

The Science of Kalām has some periods since its emergence. After the 14th century, it is called the period of commentary and annotations. Commentary is a work written in order to explain an important text belonging to a branch of science. In the commentaries the ambiguous expressions of the original text are explained, the deficiencies are completed and the subject is made clear with examples. Annotation means an explanatory and supplementary note added between the lines of a work and the edges of the pages. It became an independent type of compilation with the conversion of these notes into independent works. In the science of Kalām, a number of commentaries and annotations have been compiled. One of these works is the treatise of Aqāid-i Adudiyyah by Ash’ārī theologian Adududdīn al-Ījī. In this study, the nature of the commentary and annotation literature in Kalām tradition, the reasons of compilation, the commentary and annotations of Aqāid-i Adudiyyah will be discussed. At the end of the study, the text of Aqāid-i Adudiyyah and its Turkish translation are included.
