Abstract

Gadamer is a thinker who is addressed within hermeneutical thought. His hermeneutics often follows the footsteps of Heidegger's ideas rather than Dilthey. This is because he discusses the interpretation as an ontological problem, not as an epistemological one. Therefore, it is also opposed to the approach that takes its object in epistemological way. Using the concept of play instead of the idea of method, Gadamer wants to emphasize the uniqueness of human experience. Every person who understands tries to incorporate something that is not within their range of vision. It does so only through a tradition that is offered us through the language. Since, by the means of language which is the only entity to be understood, we can talk about the universality of understanding. Therefore, Gadamer says that every attempt to understand is a tradition. Such that the interpretation only turns into an action that requires participation in the linguistic side of the tradition. Thus, for Gadamer, every meaning and interpretation is possible within a linguistically embodied tradition.
