Abstract

Reading expands the perspectives of individuals by increasing their comprehension skills. Therefore, reading skills and reading habits should be concentrated on during education process. Teachers, who are one of the most significant determinants of success in education, should be a role model for students to gain reading habits. It is much more important to be a role model in this sense rather than expecting students to gain reading habits by themselves or just advising them about reading. In this study, the teachers who work in a secondary school in the city center of Uşak, were asked to be a model to students for reading books, to enter the classes with books in their hands, to walk in the corridors of school with books in their hands and to discuss about their books with the students who are interested, and teachers provided support in this respect. As a result of the study, it has been observed that the students become more willing to read books, and there was an increase in the number of the students who possess books, talk about books and read books in the idle classes. The subject of our study was determined being inspired by the words of famous author Tolstoy: “Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.”
