EXAMINATION OF METAPHOR PERCEPTIONS OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS ON THE CONCEPT OF 'LEISURE TIME'

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the metaphor perceptions of university students on the concept of leisure time. Review and qualitative analysis techniques were used in the study. The population of the study consists of students from various faculties in Fırat University in the academic year of 2017-2018. The sampling group consists of students randomly selected and who wanted to participate in the survey; 42.8% female (143), 57.2% male (191), a total of 334 university students. In order to determine the metaphors in the minds of these students about the concept of leisure time, forms with "leisure time is ......." written on them were prepared and asked to be filled as they feel. Also, some demographics and leisure time activities they have participated were also asked of the students. Content analysis method was used in this study which is designed with qualitative research. SPSS 20.0 program was utilized to analyse the data in the study and descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage etc. were presented in parallel with the aim of the study. According to the findings of the study, participants have created 32 metaphors on the concept of leisure time. These metaphors were then gathered under 15 different categories in terms of common features. When the metaphor statements of university students on 'leisure time' were evaluated, 'sports and healthy life' 42 (12.5%) and social media 38 (%11.3) stand out with high ratios. Again, the ratios of 'free time' 31 (9.2%), music film 29 (8.6%), playing games 27 (8.0%), having fun 27 (8.0%), travelling 26 (7.7%), reading books 25 (7.4%) were observed. According to the study results, the metaphor statements of university students on the concept of 'leisure time' may be expressed as to have opinions such as sports and healthy life, social media, having fun, reading, travelling. These findings, when considered in general, can be said that metaphor statements of university students on the concept of leisure time present an activity oriented outlook.
