Abstract

In Turkish society, modernization and innovation movements that occurred in many field, especially in education, firstly took place in the military field and then moved to civilian area. This is also true for the music. Military musicians played an active role in the initiation, implementation and dissemination of the music policies of the Republican era in line with the systematic way planned by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. The present study, which contains an overall examination of the music policies of the Republican Era, aims to reveal the contributions of prominent military musicians, who shaped Turkish music education and cultural life, such as Colonel Osman Zeki Üngör, composer of Turkish National Anthem, Colonel Veli Kanık, Colonel Servet İhsan Künçer and Lieutenant Colonel Halid Recep Arman to the innovative music policies applied with the proclamation of the Republic. We believe that this study can be a source for further studies and can fill the current gap in the field of military music.
