Abstract

The last period of the Ottoman Empire witnessed to the conflicts of interest that the foreign states attempted to get a share from this country. The foreign states established several financial institutions so as to retain their interests in the Ottoman Empire or they established a branch of the financial institutions, which were in their countries, within the Ottoman territories. Within that period we confront the Deutsche Bank based on German support and the Ottoman Bank based on French support as the most powerful financial institutions. The National Bank of Turkey started its operations in 1909 soon after the Young Turk Revolution and it was an English bank which continued its work until 1931. We confront the National Bank of Turkey as the only bank which represented the English interests in the Ottoman because London Committee within the Ottoman Bank lost its importance over time and the bank turned into a French bank. Although the National Bank of Turkey was an English bank, it was supported especially in the establishment phase by the Union and Progress leaders and some people of the party took part in the bank management. In this sense, the National Bank of Turkey was supported as a rival against the Deutsche Bank and the Ottoman Bank which dominated the banking sector. In our study, the fields of activity of the foreign banks in the Ottoman Empire will be observed and particularly it will be dwelled on the activities of the National Bank of Turkey, its contributions to the economy of Ottoman and Turkey, its role in Turkey-England relations and how it was affected from the process of Republic.
