Abstract

The history of ceramics is as old as civilization. Clay is a material that absorbs water for long periods and can take shape after being wet. Although it is known that the ceramics was produced in Anatolia around 6000 BC, the pieces of ceramics found in Çatalhöyük have survived to the present day and presented the first clues about the history of mankind. Ceramics, which have survived for thousands of years, provide information about the lifestyles and cultural differences of civilizations through writing, symbols and paintings. It is known that after the first ceramics were found in Anatolia around 6000 BC, the first glazed ceramics appeared in Egypt around 4000 BC. Ceramic is also a material that does not harm the environment because it is obtained from nature by natural methods. Many firing techniques have been used on clay from past to today’s ceramic. The most important of these tecniques are raku firing, wood firing, obvara firing, saggar firing, reduction firing, pit firing, macsabal firing, salt firing techniques. In this study, Obvara firing technique and the traditional applications made with this technique are discussed with examples from the works of several artists using this technique.
