Abstract

Since sea transportation is carried out in the marine environment, communication with land decreases as moving away from the land. Ships should provide ship-land and ship-ship communication without interruption with their limited facilities. The importance of communication at sea; stems from the necessity of the timely transmission of risky situations that threaten the ship and the environment to the stations and surrounding vessels. Sea transport is subject to international rules and communication at sea is an important part of the International Maritime Organization Convention on the Safety of Life at Sea. The aim of Global Maritime Distress Safety System (GMDSS) is to provide safety communications to ships near the system and to a remote land station at anytime and anywhere. In this context, the operation of radio and satellite communication methods and devices which are used as global sea, danger and security system requirements and the perspective for the future are included in this study.
