Abstract

Aim of this study is to examine the environmental awareness of the students at Dokuz Eylul University at Buca faculty of Education in terms of different variables and their past experiences related enrionmental issues. The study was carried in the spring semester of 2016-2017 academic year and included 173 students. The data were collected with a questionnaire consisting of demographic information about the students, past experiences, and an environmental behavior scale that determined their environmental sensitivities. It was found that the students had "moderate" awareness about environment; there was no significant relationship between the environmental awareness scores and subjects’ age, sex, and department. However, a statistically significant relationship was found between gender and the scores from "environmentally conscious consumers" among the survey sub-dimensions in favor of girls. In addition, the students' previous experiences in environmental education were examined to determine their impact on environmental awareness, and for some variables there were significant differences between groups in terms of questionnaire scores and sub-scale scores.
