Abstract

The main purpose of this study is to give a different perspective to our education system and to help catching the world standards with preparing educational materials by comparing the acquisition, book fictions and process maps of an English and Turkish seventh grade textbooks. The study was conducted through a document review of qualitative research methods. The research data is achieved by comparing the acquisition in the an English 2 textbook, which was prepared in accordance with National Program in England, and a Turkish 7 textbook, which is in the same class level, and by comparison of the fictions and process maps of these books. As a result of the research, it has been revealed that Turkish textbooks focus more on cognitive skills in accordance with the acquisitions determined by the Ministry of Education (MEB), while English textbooks are prepared devoted to help students to develop their critical thinking skills by the acquisitions in accordance with high-level thinking skills. Although the fictions of both books have similar contents, it has been showed that the process maps are partially similar. The results of the research reveal the necessity of preparing textbooks, which are the most common teaching materials in our country, in accordance with the requirements of the time and by following the developments of the external world.
