Abstract

The fact that vocal music forms constituting the majority compared to the forms of non-vocal music in Classical Turkish Music is an indication that this music has developed based on human voice in terms of its structure. The fact that the vocal element is in the foreground makes vocal performance and therefore the use of human voice important. Contrary to the importance given to human voice, there is a limited number of studies on the subject. The work done so far has generally focused on the analysis of vocal recordings of certain performers, thus being limited to the XXth century and after. Although historical studies have been carried out within this scope, it is observed that there is not enough focus on the question of whether there is information about human voice in sources of the musical literature written before this date. Although there are various issues related to music in it, edvars, which are mostly theoretical works in which maqams and usuls (rhythmic pattern) are explained are the oldest sources of written information related to Classical Turkish Music. One of the other issues in the edvars related to music other than the maqams and usuls is the importance of human voice. In this study, based on the above question, the importance of human voice in edvars which is an issue that is not emphasized until now was examined. The aim of the study is to contribute to the literature by classifying the scattered data in the written sources and researches related to the subject.
