Abstract

Similarities of Japan and Turkey which are too far away from each other in terms of geography and culture in their modernization process is the significant subject comparison of Eastern societies with Western culture. In the 19th century, two countries that noticed that the way of their viability is through reaching levels of countries, over themselves in terms of military power, science and technology, entered into processes of social transformation under the influence of leaders who created willpower in the direction of modernization. In this period, Western culture became a focus and steps were taken towards the Westernization of traditional culture. The two countries, consider the Western music culture as an important part of the change, sought to create a new national music culture by taking this culture directly and idealizing traditional music through synthesis. Thus, Western style bands were formed, the foundations of Western music education were laid and ways of “globalization” in traditional music were sought and made standardization in Western style. The similarity of these processes, in which a new era began in two music cultures, is an important indicator for the role of Western music in the ideal of modernization.
