Abstract

The aim of this research is to determine attitudes of the university students towards visual arts studying in sports and music education departments. The Wilson-Stuckhardt Fine Arts Attitude Scale, in which a total of 180 students -85 from music education department and 95 from sports education- participated, was applied. Independent sample t-test was done. According to the scale scores, those who participated in the survey mainly ticked the positive statements like 'mostly agree' and 'agree' options. There was a significant difference between men and women in the positive statements: "Art allows people to express things that cannot be told" and "Art is an expression of the human soul at all ages and levels" (p <0.05). There was no significant difference in the comparison of the other items of the scale in terms of the departments that the participants attend (p>0,05). In terms of gender on the other hand, there was found a significant difference about the negative statements such as 'Art education is not important at all' and 'Art is not good at all' (p <0,05). No significant difference was found in negative statements with regard to the comparison of the music and sports education departments (p> 0,05). As a result, it can be said that attitudes towards visual arts have not changed no matter if the students receive sports or music education. Visual perception courses, applied in educational programmes, can also be arranged in youth centres that have been activated in every province and county. Creative works should be supported in line with people's interests and needs. This study is suggested to be carried out in different groups of young, adult, and even older people.
