Abstract

The language we use is an important part of our identity and the consciousness of who we are. The concepts of language and identity are closely related and are constantly discussed. Language has one of the most important roles in shaping the identity of the individual. In this context, language is extremely important in terms of building and maintaining identity. In the early 20th century, Kazakhstan was a good example in terms of its concretization. The Kazakhs, who lived under Russian and Tatar cultural hegemony for nearly 200 years, highlighted the Kazakh identity in order to stand against this hegemony in the early 20th century. The efforts to create Kazakh language in terms of the construction and preservation of the Kazakh identity and the attempts to disseminate the Kazakh language as the language of instruction are reflected in the Kazakh national press. With this study, we will evaluate the relationship between national identity and language through the ideas of Kazakh intellectuals in Kazakhstan. The articles published in the periodical Kazak and Aykap, published in this period, are the main material of our study.
