Abstract

False friends (faux amis) are words or expressions that have similar forms to one in a person's native language, but a different meaning as in the English examples of magazine “periodical” and French magasin “shop” being used in different contects. Such conceptions constitute communication problems and foreign language teaching by causing confusion and misinterpretation, plus lead to mistakes in the field of translation. Another example is “asparagus”, which is an ordinary plant in general language, but curiously enough used by Turks in the sense of “fake news.” In this article an analysis of the concept of “false friend”, its origin, its difference from true friends, varieties, inconveniences and many examples both in Western languages and Turkish
