Nurullah Ataç, a prominent representative of the impressionistic approach to literary criticism, is considered to represent an important phase in the Republican thought and art life. Having especially focused his interests on the simplification trend in languages, theatre criticism, poetry, critical theory and the Westernization debates, Ataç had an influence on both his contemporaries and the subsequent generations. Nevertheless, the historical role he played in changing the deeply rooted approach to cinema in Turkey has been ignored until today. This study aims to explore the impact of Nurullah Ataç’s thoughts on the displacement and transformation of the predominantly negative view of cinema that preserved its hegemonic status in our country until 1950s, and to determine in which points his constructive contribution the field of cinematic criticism differ from his contemporaries. Taking these points of difference even further, a main objective of our research is to discuss various contributions of Nurullah Ataç to the process by which cinema started to be perceived as an independent artistic discipline in our country.
