Abstract

Erol Güngör is one of the important intellectuals of Turkish rightists who was emerged during Republican period of Turkey. He was actively involved in both intellectual arguments and translated important literature to Turkish during Cold War era. Some of the books he has translated are “The Meaning of the 20th Century: The Great Transition” by Kennet E. Boulding, “The Stages of Economic Growth: A Non-Communist Manifesto” by W.Whitman Rostow, “The Crisis of the European Mind” by Paul Hazard, “Cultural Foundations Of Industrial Civilization” by John U. Nef, “Eighteen Lectures On Industrial Society” by Raymond Aron and the “Books That Changed the World” by Robert Downs. It can be stated that he was one of the rare rightest intellectuals who has tried to understand Marxism as well as criticized it. All the literature he has translated were written by anti-Marxists. These specific literature he has translated aims to develop an anti-Marxist look on historical development of West and ignores Marxist perspectives. They also implies that historically, ideas and thought development comes before the material development. By this translations and arguments he has involved, he was one of the most important right wing-conservatives of Turkey at 1970s.
