Abstract

The other, is a different person, who has one or more features not belonging to the group. The group considers itself as the norm and judges those, who do not meet this norm, as "the other" in any way. Othering (becoming other and making other) reveals negative consequences both in the public aspect and in the individual. The aim of this study is to develop a tool, that measures the distance between persons in terms of as social class, lifestyle, religious belief, political opinion, sexual orientation. Created for this purpose the "Emotional Distance Towards The Other" scale is valid and reliable with its two-dimensional (x2 / SD = 4.62; RMSEA = .10, CFI = .93; NNF U = .93; NF = .92; SRM = .11, α = .95,. 94) and four-dimensional (x2 / sd = 3.67; RMSEA = .012; CFI = .94; NNFI = .93; NFI = .90; SRMR = .09; α = .83, .87) structure. In addition, the scale was tested with the Universality-Difference Scale and a compatibility was observed. The scale of emotional distance towards the other with its flexibility, is to be used in researches, especially in the field of social psychology, to measure the distances between persons in terms of their beliefs and lifestyles.
