Abstract

Today, preservation of the quality of life in cities that are constantly growing, developing and complicating constructions accompany the necessity of establishing a regular system and the need for effective design. Especially in metropols where human traffic is intense with rapid population growth; guidance systems are graphical objects that have an importance in terms of transportation and promotion when going a somewhere and they are indispensable elements of city life. The most important problem to be solved in wayfinding design is the formation of graphic products which can be understood quickly by everyone. However, disabled individuals and their limitations are often overlooked in the regulation of urban living environments. An unhindered urban environment, which has a big importance for all individuals, has a vital prescription in the case of disabled individuals. These individuals lose the chance to act independently within the city if the features and limitations of disabled individuals are not taken into account. Especially because of the problem of direction finding caused by limitation of movement, which is the biggest problem of blindness, the designing and positioning of guidance systems for disabled people would help them in this respect. In this research, it is investigated how graphic design can help not only ordinary people but visually impaired individuals to navigate in the urban areas within the concept of accessibility, and tries to emphasize the place and importance of tactile guidance design in the field of graphic design. The Kızılay neighbourhood, one of the most central and crowded districts of Ankara, is exemplified and a tactile guidance system for visually impaired people is presented.
