Abstract

Tacuinum Sanitatis is the name of the Latin translation of Takvim es-Sıhha, which had written by Ibn Butlan (b.1066). Takvim es-Sıhha is about human health, which was translated in Latin in the thirteenth century and copied in the fourteenth century. Ibn Butlan wrote about required six essential elements for a person to spend a healthy life are: fresh air; sufficient food and drink in moderation; activity and rest; sleep and wakefulness; secretions and excretions of the body; the effects of states of mind. It emphasizes the importance of being balanced and competent and also elaborates the harmful and beneficial effects of food and plants on human health. The food and plant descriptions on the Latin copy of the work have created visual resource as well as written sources for eating and drinking in the late Medieval Era. For example we can learn about the kind of foods and methods of preparation through these images. In this article, bread images of Tacuinum Sanitatis were evaluated in the context of the history of art.
