Abstract

The most important aim of the social studies course both in our country and all over world is to bring up good citizens. In this way, when the 2005 and 2017 social studies course programs are analyzed in detail, it draws attention that the framework “good citizen” is structured on more universal aims compared to the previous programs. The present century needs to have citizens who have adopted universal values in every field of life. However, we have to protect and improve our moral values as well as adopting universal values. Therefore, it is really important for our children to make sense of motherland and patriotism correctly in their own ideas. The most appropriate course in which we can enable students to gain them is the social studies course. In this way, the aim of this research is to determine the opinions of the secondary school students on motherland and patriotism. The case study model, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the research. The study group designated by the convenience sampling consisted of 48 eighth - grade students coming from a secondary school having a medium socio-economic level in the centre of Antalya in 2017-2018 educational years. The data of the research was collected thanks to the open-ended question form prepared by the researchers and the descriptive analysis was used. When the results of the study were evaluated as a whole, it was found out that the students in the study group perceived the concept ‘motherland’ as a geographical concept and confused it with the concept ‘patriotism’ but it was pointet out that the fact that the students mentioned about ‘patriotism’ with emotional and positive feelings was positive for the study.
