Abstract

Maxine Greene is one of the leading philosophers of the twenty first century. Through her existentialist philosophy, she was interested in themes such as the need for human awareness, art and aesthetic education, freedom, democracy, wide awakeness, contemporary educational philosophies, and multiculturalism. Defying the underestimation of human as a resource under the influence of neoliberal policies, she envisons a new educational paradigm on the axis of art and aesthetic. She argues that through art we become aware of the human reality and imagine the possibilities beyond it. Art also helps us embrace differences with tolerence and respect. Therefore, art should be one of the basic priorities of education to establish a democratic and humanistic community. This paper presents an overview of Greene's understanding of art and aesthetic education, besides the concepts of wide awakeness and imagination. Additionally, the relation of these concepts to her democratic and humanistic philosophy is described.
