Abstract

This study was conducted in order to investigate the role of emotional-self awareness in the prediction of emotional intelligence. Therefore, in this study, Schutte Emotional Intelligence Scale (SEIS) and Emotional Self-Awareness Scale-33 (ESAS) were applied to 199 women and 162 men, between the ages of 18 and 65 (mean=29.34±9.35 years). For the total SEIS score Cronbach’s Alpha internal consistency coefficient was calculated 0.86 and for the total ESAS score reliability coefficient was determined as 0.84. In order to explore the relation between emotional intelligence and emotional self-awareness comprehensively, simple linear regression and multiple linear regression analyses were conducted. The principal findings of these analyses are that the total score of ESAS, and its subscales, especially the “identification” subscale, predicted the total score of the SEIS, and its “appraisal of emotions” subscale to a greater degree. The results of this study support the view that being aware of emotions and identifying them is the most important component of emotional intelligence.
