Abstract

Children’s books, which are enjoyed by children and which stir their curiosity and exploring desire, are a vital tool to have them obtain a sense of empathy, a need to know the world they live in better and core values via the topics they cover. The aim of this study is to establish the values covered in Sevim Ak’s book titled “Vanilla Scented Letters” and to specify the frequency of their occurence. The study made use of the qualitative research method and document analysis technique was also used so as to collect data. The values were categorized according to Schwartz Value Scale and the occurence frequency of them was identified. As a result of the research it was ascertained that the aforementioned book covers values such as power, safety, hedonism, accomplishment, traditionalism, benevolence, obeyence, stimulation and self-control yet it does not include the value of universality. It was found out that the most covered value is benevolence with the value of traditionalism. Stimulation and power values are established to be given little space.
