Abstract

Historically the maktebs have played a crucial law in the development of the educational process for the young generations of the Muslim population within the border of the Ottoman Empire. They are stretched in the territories of Balkans as was the Ottoman Empire expanding its territories. In this paper we will regards a couple of aspects of the development of maktebs, starting from the semantic meaning of the word makteb, and reaching to the organisational aspects of this significant educational institution during the Empire era. The notion “mekteb” derives from Arabic language, the root of the verb “katabe” , that means “writes”, and the semantic meaning of the notion “mateb” is classroom, school. So it means school, where the children obtain the initial knowledge. The Turkish author Mustafa Ozer, referes to 27 maktebs in Skopje area and Evliya Chelebi in his “Seyahatname” notes around 70 maktebs in Skopje. The curricula in maktebs has been changed through years starting from the beginning to the end the Ottoman Empire in 1924. What remained unchanged in these schools was learning Quran and the reading rules. However, beside Quran the learning of Islamic primary rules was learned as well. Since Albanian children had no school in their mother tongue, they were going in maktebs and learning the Arabic alphabet, some of Islamic rules, including the learning of some Islamic faith and learned by hart some parts from the Quran, necessary for performing the daily prayers.
