THE DIFFICULTIES ENGLISH PEOPLE MET WHEN LEARNING TURKISH AND THEIR VIEWS ABOUT TURKISH

Abstract

Learning a foreign language is a difficult and tiring work and during the learning process learners meet various challenges. These difficulties might stem from learner himself/herself, teaching and learning environment, the structure of the learned language or other reasons. After the year 2000, many English people started to reside in Fethiye. The certain number is unknown but it is estimated that five or six thousand English people live in Fethiye. The majority is comprised of English brides married to a Turkish man and retirees willing to live in a beautiful place and nice climate. These people have learned Turkish so as to meet their needs and it is inevitable for them to have difficulties when learning Turkish. This study aims to find out what difficulties adult English bilinguals have had when learning Turkish, their frequency of Turkish use and their views about Turkish. These findings can be used in teaching Turkish as foreign language area which has gained popularity recently. In order to achieve this aim in this descriptive study, 15 participants were interviewed. The participants were asked questions prepared by the researcher suitable with the principles of semi-structured interview and they were transcribed later on. As a result of the analysis it was found out that the participants find Turkish a difficult language they have had grammatical, personal and social difficulties when learning Turkish, their frequency of Turkish use differs depending on the context.
