Abstract

The objective of the research is to be able to develop an instrument which is capable of carrying out a valid and reliable measurement that serves the purpose of measuring the attitudes for summarizing adopted by the primary school fourth grade students, and appropriate to the students’ age, emotional and mental development and also their language achievement. The study group of the research consists of 408 primary school fourth grade students (Female = 203; Male = 205) who receive education in 39 primary schools located in the central district of Kırıkkale Province, in the fall semester of 2015-2016 academic year. In the analysis of the data obtained from the research, computer-aided statistical package was used. In consequence of exploratory factor analysis, 1 article was excluded from the measuring instrument. For that instrument of the rest 8 articles, it was realized that it had a structure explaining the 53.013 of the total variance and consisting of 2 factors, as a result of the exploratory factor analysis. Concerning the whole of the scale, Cronbach Alpha value was calculated as .81. It is possible to state that the Attitude Scale for Summarizing, developed in the consequence of analyzing the obtained data, is capable of measuring and assessing the attitudes adopted by the primary school students at the fourth grade for summarizing in a way that is valid and reliable. It is considered that the scale can be used in the process of reading comprehension and within the scope of studies to be conducted as relevant to the enhancement of reading skills. With this scale, the effect of affective properties on the development of reading comprehension skills of the primary school students can be analyzed.
