Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine misconceptions related to matter and its properties concepts of 7th graders based on Chi’s ontological theory. Ontological categorization is a process for identifying concepts to a category like matter, processes and mental states. Each main category has subcategories. For instance, natural kinds and artifacts are the subcategories of matter; procedure, events and constraint-based interactions are of procedure. A two-tiered 20-itemed multiple choice test was developed to determine 7th graders' misconceptions on the structure and properties of matter and to categorize them ontologically. Concept Test (CT) was administered to 117 students for a pilot study, cronbach alfa cooefficient was found 0.82. CT was then administered to 55 (31 girl, 24 boy) students studying on a private school. A total of 638 misconceptions were determined, 223 of them being resulted from miscategorization to another distinct ontological category whilst 415 of them to lateral categories.
