Abstract

Pre-service teachers who are trained in primary school teacher teaching are expected to be well trained in mathematics education as in many fields. In this study, it was focused on understanding and teaching the concept of fraction, which has an important place in mathematics subjects. Because one of the maths subjects being abstract and hard-to-understand is the concept of fractions that inhold many concepts. These concepts are part-whole, measure, quotient, operator and ratio of fractions. In this study, a qualitative study was conducted to examine the knowledge levels of the pre-service primary school teachers about these five subconstructs of fractions. 237 pre-service primary school teacher candidates participated in the study. These are pre-service teachers who take Mathematics Teaching-II course at a state university in the Central Anatolia region selected by convenience sampling method. The pre-service primary school teachers gave answer the questions about the five different subconstructs of fractions and the most correct answer was about the part-whole meaning. However, it was found that the rate of correct problem constitution in meaning quotient of fractions is very low.
