Abstract

People in many environments today, especially urban areas are exposed to such noise without realizing its potential danger to their healthy hearing. This paper describes a study that aimed at measuring the noise levels at health establishments and educational institutions in Balikesir City with a view to generate a noise map over the study area in addition to identifying noise hot spots. Noise levels were measured using the CEM DT88-52 digital sound level meter which has stveards of IEC61672. Noise measurements were conducted three times for each 32 location through the daytime (07:00-09:00 am.; 12:00-02:00 pm.; 05:00-07:00 pm). The spatial distribution ve spatial pattern of the noise pollution within the whole study area was analyzed using spatial statistics techniques. The study found that noise levels in sensitive areas could cause sleeping disturbance, interfere with speech communication ve message extraction. The paper concludes that the noise levels observed are high enough to warrant further research ve action by the environmental authorities.
