Abstract

This study, in an attempt to draw attention to the alienation and the sense of inequality nurtured by modern life, while also recalling our very own anthropocentric perception imposed by it, will focus on the contemporary artists who exhibited artistic performances – which can be interpreted through the Deleuze & Guattarian concept of becoming animal – revolving around the notion that is to be an animal. Including especially the symbolic expansions of the dog image, the study will try to broaden the range of thinking about performances produced sometimes with a shamanistic attitude in a rather realistic or parodical way, representing the other inside us, by imitating and substituting the animal and empathizing with it. Accordingly, dog performances of Oleg Kulik, Joseph Beuys, Eisa-Liisa Ahtila and Valie Export will be examined in comparison with scientific performances.
