Abstract

Tourism is a quite important sector for Turkish economy. It carries weight with increasing export and covering current account deficit. In this study, in order to contribute to the literatüre and conduct an integral analysis, consolidated financial statements, released by the Central Bank of Republic of Turkey, of 551 companies which are operating in accommodation and food service sector are analyzed in terms of cost and profitability. Within the scope of the analysis, cost of the companies operating in the industry and variation in the analysed period are put forward primarily; cost of sales and operating expenses are investigated. Profitability indicators besides cost analysis are also considered. Gross profit margin, net profit margin and operating profit are taken as the profitability indicators. Additionally, profit and losses from other operations, extraordinary income and profit, and net profit and losses are also interpreted. According to the findings, the crisis lived in the international arena negatively affected tourism sector in 2015 and 2016.
