Abstract

The aim of this study was to develop an inventory to assess social skills of adults and to investigate basic psychometric properties of the scale. Initially, researchers prepared 350 items in line with the related studies assessing social skills. Subsequently, two test administrations were done. In the first study a total of 1210 people, between the ages of 18 and 69 years, 845 women and 365 men participated. Through this study 80 items were selected for the target test using item analysis and item response theory. In the second study 80 items were administered to a total of 2186 people, 1108 women and1078 men, age range was between 18 to 72. Some of the participants received the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, the General Self-efficacy Scale, the Empathy Quotient, the Schutte Self Report Emotional Intelligence Test, the Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire, the Big-Five Personality Questionnaire along with the scale for the validity study. The results showed that internal consistency coefficient of the scale was 0.956 for the whole group, 0.955 for both men and women. Test re-test correlation coefficient was 0.698. Correlation coefficients between the scale and a aforementioned instruments ranged from 0.080 to 0.761. The results revealed that the scale included basic psychometric characteristics and was suitable for use in related studies.
