Abstract

The "Ottoman Painting Art" especially the Murad III. (1574-1595) lived the most productive years in the reign years and the "Ottoman painting art" reached its classical style during this period. The tradition of writing surnames also started in this period. The most important figure of this classical period is undoubtedly the painter Osman, who worked most of his works. The first miniature surname, "Surname-i Hümayun", was painted by painter Osman and his team. Another miniaturized surname is the "Surname-i Vehbi" depicted by Levi in the Tulip Age. This work, which is one of the most important visual sources reflecting the entertainment concept of the Tulip Age, is separated from its miniatures of "Surname-i Hümayun" by its main directions. In this period when the convergence with the West began and the Western influence began to be felt in the Ottoman country for the first time, painter Levni began to experiment with perspectives in his miniature paintings "Surname-i Vehbi". In addition, instead of tradesmen regiments seen in painter Osman's miniatures, miniature paintings emphasized entertainment. This reflects one of the differences seen in social life during the period of Murad III and Ahmed III. In both works, the miniatures are in front of the text. In the Ottoman period, there are no other examples of miniature surnames that have been identified except these two works. These works, which presented sections to us from a certain period and which reveal the social and cultural life of that period, came to be a daily documentary. In this study, information was given about the periods of writing these two works, authors, painters, features of writing and their miniatures.
