Abstract

According to what we learned from cuneiform documents, research on astral sciences in Old Mesopotamia dates back to the time of the invention of writing. The belief that the events that took place in the sky influenced the events that took place on the earth and that the gods reported to the people through the signs in the sky, increased the interest in astral sciences in Old Mesopotamia. In Mesopotamia since the III. Millennium B.C., texts have emerged that can be associated with astrology. However, since thought that III. Millennium astrology is more verbal. Especially, systematic astrology texts have begun to be compiled since the Old Babylonian Period. (About B.C. 2000-1600) Mesopotamian astrology reached its peak in the Neo Assyrian Period. (B.C. 911-612) As a result of astronomical observations of scientists for centuries, important works have been given in astronomy and astrology. The most comprehensive of these is the "Enuma Anu Enlil" series of astrology tablets. Until the second half of the first Millennium B.C., it is understood that astronomy and astrology are not precisely separated in Old Mesopotamia. Also astrological reports and letters sent by astrologers to the Assyrian kingdoms are important sources of Mesopotamian astrology. Old Mesopotamian astral sciences has developed as an extension of religion. In Mesopotamia from the second half of the first Millennium B.C., important scientific discoveries have taken place in astral sciences. Thus, the influence of religious beliefs in Mesopotamian astral sciences has begun to decrease. We learn that Mesopotamian astrology especially affects Greek, Egyptian and Indian astrology.
