Abstract

Urban slum areas in the world and Turkey are affected by economic and social reasons, extreme population increase and decrease, increase in crime incidents, low and inadequate standards of housing reserves in the region in terms of quality, wrong site selection and natural disasters such as fire, earthquake and landslide, and it becomes a need to upgrade these areas. Urban renewal and urban transformation tools are widely used for this purpose. Within the scope of this study, it has been demonstrated how structural damages are effective in taking urban transformation decisions and aims to reveal similar and different aspects of urban transformation decisions in Turkey and in the Ankara province under review by setting out the objectives of the urban transformation examples in the world. In addition, more effective, visual and questionable working environment was created by using geographical information systems obtained from the related institutions taking the urban transformation decision. The damage distribution map created by using ArcGIS software was conducted in the Şehit Cengiz Topel Neighborhood, one of the neighborhoods where urban transformation decisions were taken, and its immediate surroundings which is located in the Ankara Province of Mamak District.
