Abstract

When investigating the kavsnames (historical archery documents), it is see that the history of archery was started with prophet Adam. For this reason, archery has begun with the life of mankind and has revealed itself throughout history through almost everywhere that mankind has existed. Especially as a warfare, it conduced toward gaining superiority of the past states in wars. It is undoubtedly inevitable that such an important instrument has created a unique knowledge throughout history. It is seen that the archery books written especially in the Ottoman period are called Kavsnâme. Generally, the contents of these books are similar to each other. The work we investigate named as “Kavsname” is the translation and the commantary of Mahmud b. Muhammed b. El-Hasan from the book, “Bugyetü’l-Merâm Gâyetü’l-Garâm”, which was originally written in Arabic by Tayboga el-Eşrefî, famous Mamluk musketeer. It is distinguished from other kavsnames in terms of detailed description of the performances in festivals, archery, and martial arts. The aforesaid work having a single scribal copy in the Topkapı Palace is of great importance in terms of archery history.
