Abstract

Kemaleddin Kamyar, who was among the emirs of the Anatolian Seljuk State during the time of Alaaddin Kayqubad I (1220-1237), served at important offices mainly as vizier and sübaşı (warlord) of Kayseri. Emir Kemaleddin came to the fore as a figure of moderate importance in the early years of Sultan Kayqubad due to the struggles of influence within the state. He was detracted from the power and expelled then. He was pardoned by the Sultan thanks to Melik Eşref, the Emir of Ahlat, and gradually increased his influence in parallel with the growing eudemonia in the state. He encouraged the Sultan to stand out against Jalaluddin Khwarezmshah and undertook significant duties owing to the imminent Mongol Invasion. Due to the forthcoming threat, the Sultan sent Kemaleddin Kamyar to the region at the helm of a great army in 1232. Following his efforts, the provinces of Eastern Anatolia, including Ahlat, went under the domination of Seljuks. Emir Kemaleddin Kamyar was called as the pehlivan (wrestler) of Sham and Arman provinces after his successes.
