Abstract

From the beginning of the 19th century to the first quarter of the 20th century, Ottoman geography has been subjected to the invasion of Europeans who were under the identity of historian, archaeologist, botanist, doctor, geographer, traveler and researcher, by means of espionage, missionary activity, smuggling of ancient artifacts and various harmful purposes. In this period it was possible to come across these people in almost every town of the Ottoman geography including the Balkans, Aegean Islands, Anatolia, Egypt, North Africa, Yemen, Aden and Red Sea. The documents in the Ottoman archives, the books to which they perceive their travels, and the works they took to their country in legal or illegal way, clearly show this situation. In this study, the life, personality of the British archaeologist and art historian Ernest Arthur Gardner (1862-1939) and his visits on Aegean islands and ancient artifacts in Western Anatolia were discussed. The main sources of the work are the documents of the Prime Ministry Ottoman Archives and the books provided by E.A.Gardner's British Library, which correspond to the travels of Gardner on the Ottoman lands. In particular, the dates, durations and places of travel of Gardner's travels have been identified from the archive documents. And knowledge was gathered from his books about his observations on the places where he travelled and the historical works which he was interested in.
