Abstract

The aim of the study was to both identify English instructors’ beliefs, obstacles, and needs concerning professional development programs working at state universities in the Mediterranean Region of Turkey in terms of some variables through a questionnaire and a semi-structured interview form constructed by the researcher after a thorough literature review. The integrated results of qualitative and quantitative showed that English instructors in the study hold the beliefs that PDPs are necessary and helpful to review and develop teaching skills, competence, methods, and practices. Workload, cost, and lack of institutional support are among the most crucial factors that impede English instructors to take part in PDPs. Furthermore, among the highest degree of PD needs reported by English instructors were assessment and evaluation, test development, technology use, followed by the need for the CEFR and new approaches and methods.
