Abstract

This study was carried out to investigate Ordu University, the School of Physical Education and Sports students' views on sports sponsorship and to determine whether the concept of sports sponsorship in the literature is understood correctly. 217 students from the School of Physical Education and Sports of Ordu University were randomly selected and interviewed. Students were first administered a questionnaire to obtain socio-demographic information and then another questionnaire to measure their views on sports sponsorship. Results indicate that male students agree more with the view that any increase in the number of spectators has a positive effect on attracting sponsors than do female students (75.7%). Significantly high number of female students regards sports sponsorhip as just a form of donation compared to male students. Physical Education and Sports Teaching Department students agree more with the view that sports sponsorhip is donation than do Sports Management Department students (74.6%). Results also indicate that whether or not participants are licensed athletes has an effect on their views on attracting sponsors to sports activities.
