Abstract

Darülfünun, one of the educational institutions transferring from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic of Turkey, is at the higher education / university level and was established in Istanbul and has been subject to a number of regulations since the time of the Ottoman State. Since Istanbul was occupied during the years of Independence War, it was not possible to make arrangements about Darülfünun. As the priority issue is the rescue of the country from the occupation, the emphasis was placed on better management of the existing institutions in the field of education, and fundamental decisions on the future were taken. After the Independence War was successfully concluded, the understanding of the national state was passed and significant reforms were made. For the adoption of reforms such as the abolition of the Sultanate and the declaration of the Republic and the development of the new national Turkish state, education issues were generally dealt with intensively and in particular some decisions concerning Darülfünun were taken. It is the autonomy of Darülfünun in these resolutions and Parliament's expectations from Darülfünun is high. However, Darülfünun soon became the focus of criticism on the grounds that he could not meet expectations. These expectations and criticisms, the current political situation, and the history and scientific accumulation of Darülfünun are taken into consideration, and remarkable debates have been made in the press and in the parliament. In this study, criticism and discussions about Darülfünun are discussed. The difference of the work from the other works is that the events and criticisms about Darülfünun are handled in a comparative and comprehensive way as the documents allow. Moreover, the focus of discussions on Darülfünun and the process leading to the Darülfünun reform of 1933 are explained in the cause-and-effect relationship.
