Abstract

The need for new energy sources is growing for various reasons, such as industrial and technological developments and population growth. In addition, the interest in renewable energy sources has increased because fuels derived from fossil energy sources cause serious environmental problems; fossil energy reserves will soon be extinct; and prices for fossil energy are unstable. Renewable energy sources such as solar, geothermal, wind, hydroelectric, and biomass energy are the alternative energy sources preferred by many countries. This study aims at selecting the most appropriate renewable energy source by company planning to make investment in Bursa. Criteria and alternatives were evaluated by engineers who are experts in this field. The main criteria include energy efficiency, environmental effects, security of energy supply, reasonable investment costs, and governmental promotion. Considering these criteria, solar, wind, hydroelectric, and geothermal energy were accepted as the preferable renewable energy source alternatives. A fuzzy analytic hierarchy process method was used to select sources among these alternatives. The outcome of the evaluation suggested that the most appropriate renewable energy sources are hydroelectric and wind energy; this outcome was reported to the company.
