Abstract
The names of the settlements reflect the relationship between people and space as well as the way people perceive space. This research aims to reveal which factors are the sources of inspiration in the name of the villages located in the district of Biga in Çanakkale Province. The natural and human environment of the mentioned village has been a source of inspiration for the village names in various forms. 39 % (43) of the rural settlements in the study area were named due to an inspiration from the natural environment characteristics and 61 % (67) due to an inspiration from human environmental features. It has been understood that human environment characteristics are more effective as a source of inspiration than physical environment characteristics in the research area. Factors influencing this situation include; The settlement history of Biga district, the influence of different cultures and civilizations, the stage of migration from different regions, and the economic activities carried out in the field.
