Abstract

Translation has been in existence since the first days of humanity. This humanitarian action, which consists of at least two different languages and cultures, is a complex activity by its very nature. The target of translators in the translation process is to accomplish this complex activity in the most appropriate way. Within the scope of this study, two translations of the short story The Gift of Magi (ST), written by O. Henry, were analysed comparatively in an extensive way. The first translation is by Püren Özgören with the title Bir Noel Hediyesi (T1) and the other translation is by Leyla İsmier Özcengiz with the title Noel Hediyesi (T2). The aim of this study is to reveal the translation strategies used in the translation of cultural and non-cultural elements and problems of coherency, cohesion and consistency in the translations. As a result of the analysis, it was found out that the translators used different translation strategies, benefited from various translation strategies while transferring cultural elements and some coherency and cohesion problems occurred while no problems of consistency existed.
