Abstract

One of the prominent issues of the Social Anthropology doctoral dissertation “Being From Somewhere: Being Antakian Through Narratives and Images”, which aims to define what it means to be from somewhere, was gossip and rumours that the participants frequently mentioned and lamented related to Antakya during the fieldworks. Though gossip and rumour have a negative meaning both notions are under the scope of Sociology, Psychology and Social Anthropology. In Antakya province that hosts people from different religions and ethnicities, as the transmitter of the discourse of daily life and facts gossip and rumours figure out what shouldn’t be done in the process of building relations. They, in the meantime, refer how the things should be in accordance with tacit modus vivendi. Providing to transmit the cultural values to the next generation through don’ts, they ensue as the constructing instruments of identity on the basis of past. In this paper, consequently, the contribution of the notions of gossip and rumours to ‘being from somewhere’ in the means of their related discourse will be studied from the view of Social Anthropology.
