Abstract

Yoruks, whose best profession is the animal husbandry, diagnose and entitle the diseases of their animals. Appropriate traditional treatments are applied regarding the symptoms of the disease which may vary according to the species of the animals. Sometimes herbal mixtures, animal products, and a mixture of all those are used for the treatment. Sometimes, they even use cauterization, phlebotomy and surgical methods. Vaccines made from live germs obtained from sick animals are used in the cases of epidemic diseases in order to protect the non-sick animals in the herd. In fracture cases, broken bones of the animals are wrapped by using “seyik”, a stick that enables the broken bone to be flat and fixed, and waited to be healed. In order to protect the animals from some kinds of deleterious insects, animals are oiled with the “püse”, a resin based material used in treatment. Cauterization is sometimes used against the deleterious insects. Incineration of the living spaces is another precautionary measure for the deleterious insects. Various castration methods are applied in order to raise the meat yield and for the reclamation of the herd. In this regard, rather than intangible terms like “urasa” the study refers to Yoruks’ physical public veterinary treatments which may provide data to animal health studies.
