Abstract

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the situation of gender roles and relations within the food culture. This paper aims to generate ideas on the role of food production, distribution, preparation and consuming which determine the gender relations, and also how the nutritional system figures and involves the femininities and masculinities. When we look at the different native groups in history and today, we can see that they have several practices in their gender relations and food systems. Although many practices reveal different nutritional actions in terms of femininities and masculinities, women are under the authority of masculinity. Women, surrounded by foods, nutritional actions and production-consumption activities, were pressured to a secondary position by patriarchy. Patriarchal system, determined and maintained by the traditional structure, household order and gender roles, accepts the woman labor as secondary whether they work or not. At the same time it steadily controls the women inside food culture by quantification, tasting, financing, decision making and so on and so forth.
