Abstract

The aim of this research is to investigate the secondary school teachers’ level of burnout, and also to determine whether their level of burnout differs in terms some personal and occupational variables. This study is a descriptive, quantitive and evaluatory research of the existing status. The population of the research was constituted of 2363 secondary school teachers, 1922 of which is from public school and 441 from private school, who comes from 61 secondary schools, 42 of which working for public school and 19 of which for private school, in Küçükçekmece district of İstanbul in 2016-2017 educational years. The sample of this study was composed of 330 secondary school teachers, 268 of which is from public and 62 from private school, who are selected as the samples by the method of “ random sampling”. The data collection tool was constituted of two parts. In the first part, a demographic form was used. In the second part, “Maslach Burnout Inventory” was used for data collection. Collected data was analyzed via IBM SPSS 20.0 (PASW 20.0) program. Burnout level of secondary school teachers has been found at medium level. Also, teachers had medium level on “Depersonalization” subscale and “Personal Accomplishment” subscale and high level on “Emotional Exhaustion” Subscale. While burnout of secondary school teachers statistically differed according to gender, age, the type of educational institute and period of service on schools; a significant difference according to marital status, professional seniority, education level and branch variables was not found.
