Abstract

The objective of this research is to determine level of institutionalization regarding public and private secondary schools according to opinions of teachers. It is considered that the results obtained from this study is important in terms of reducing existing gap related to institutionalization of educational organizations in literature. This research is a descriptive research in survey model. The population is comprised of teachers being in charge in public and private secondary schools situated in the districts of Nizip, Şahinbey and Şehitkâmil of city of Gaziantep. Sample of research is comprised of 758 teachers selected according to stratified sampling method and being in charge in 50 secondary schools in 2015-2016 academic year. Opinions of teachers have been obtained with “School Institutionalization Scale” developed by Özgan (2001). The data have been interpreted by considering arithmetic mean, standard deviation and t test. According to the research results, public secondary schools have been institutionalized in dimension of specialization and adaptability at the medium level and in cultural power, social responsibility, formalization and consistency at the high level. Private secondary schools have been institutionalized in dimension of specialization, social responsibility and adaptability at the high level and in dimension of cultural power, formalization and consistency at the very high level. Meanwhile considerable difference has been found between the levels of institutionalization regarding public and private secondary schools at all dimensions. Suggestions have been developed by taking the results into consideration.
